Amazing Grace: 76 Hymns from Swedish ecumenical hymnbook - in English.

Copy and enjoy!
Se also God moves in a mysterious way.

1 Holy God, we praise Thy Name;

Lord of all, we bow before Thee!
All on earth Thy scepter claim,
all in Heaven above adore Thee;
infinite Thy vast domain,
everlasting is Thy reign.

 2. Hark! the loud celestial hymn

angel choirs above are raising,
cherubim and seraphim,
in unceasing chorus praising;
fill the heavens with sweet accord:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord.

3. Lo! the apostolic train

join the sacred Name to hallow;
prophets swell the loud refrain,
and the white robed martyrs follow;
and from morn to set of sun,
through the Church the song goes on.

4. Holy Father, Holy Son,

Holy Spirit, Three we name Thee;
while in essence only One,
undivided God we claim Thee;
and adoring bend the knee,
while we own the mystery.

5. Thou art King of glory, Christ:

Son of God, yet born of Mary;
for us sinners sacrificed,
and to death a tributary:
first to break the bars of death,
Thou has opened Heaven to faith.

6. From Thy high celestial home,

judge of all, again returning,
we believe that Thou shalt come
in the dreaded doomsday morning;
when Thy voice shall shake the earth,
and the startled dead come forth.

7. Therefore do we pray Thee, Lord:

help Thy servants whom, redeeming
by Thy precious blood out-poured,
Thou hast saved from Satan’s scheming.
Give to them eternal rest
in the glory of the blest.

8. Spare Thy people, Lord, we pray,

by a thousand snares surrounded:
Keep us without sin today,
never let us be confounded.
Lo, I put my trust in Thee;
never, Lord, abandon me.

9. Holy God, we praise Thy name...

2 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!

O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear,
now to His temple draw near;
praise Him in glad adoration.

2. Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;

surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.
Ponder anew
what the Almighty can do,
if with His love He befriend thee.

3. Praise to the Lord, who, when darkness of sin is abounding,

who, when the godless do triumph, all virtue confounding,
sheddeth His light,
chaseth the horrors of night,
saints with His mercy surrounding.

4. Praise to the Lord, O let all that is in me adore Him!

All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him.
Let the Amen
 sound from His people again,
gladly for aye we adore Him.

3 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!

2. Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,

casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
who was, and is, and evermore shall be.

3. Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee

though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see.
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
perfect in power, in love, and purity.

4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!

4 Praise the Lord, each tribe and nation,

praise Him with a joyous heart;
ye who know His full salvation,
gather now from every part;
let your voices glorify,
in His temple, God on high.

2. He’s our God, and our Creator,

we, His flock and chosen seed:
He, our Lord and Liberator,
us from sin and peril freed:
and at last His flock shall rest
in the mansions of the blest.

3. Give Him thanks within His portals;

in the courts His deeds proclaim;
hither come, ye ransomed mortals,
glorify our Savior’s Name.
Ever kind and loving, He
keeps His faith eternally.

5 Now thank we all our God,

with heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
 in Whom this world rejoices;
Who from our mothers’ arms
has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today.

2. O may this bounteous God

through all our life be near us,
with ever joyful hearts
and blessèd peace to cheer us;
and keep us in His grace,
and guide us when perplexed;
and free us from all ills,
 in this world and the next!

3. All praise and thanks to God

the Father now be given;
the Son and Him Who reigns
with Them in highest Heaven;
the one eternal God,
Whom earth and Heaven adore;
for thus it was, is now,
and shall be evermore.

9 My soul, now praise your Maker!

Let all with in me bless his name
who makes you full partaker
of mercies more than you dare claim.
Forget him not whose meekness
still bears with all your sin,
who heals your every weakness,
renews your life within;
whose grace and care are endless
and saved you through the past;
who leaves no sufferer friendless
but rights the wronged at last.

2. He offers all his treasure

of justice, truth, and righteousness,
his love beyond our measure,
his yearning pity over distress;
nor treats is as we merit
but sets his anger by.
the poor and contrite spirit
finds his compassion nigh;
and high as heaven above us,
as break from close of day,
so far, since he has loved us,
he puts our sins away.

3. For as a loving father

has pity on his children here,
God in his arms will gather
all those who him like children fear.
He knows how frail our powers,
who but from dust are made.
we flourish as the flowers,
and even so we fade;
the wind but over them passes,
and all their bloom is over.
We wither like the grasses;
our place knows us no more.

4. His grace remains forever,

and children’s children yet shall prove
that God forsakes them never
who in true fear shall seek his love.
In heaven is fixed his dwelling,
his rule is over all;
you hosts with might excelling,
with praise before him fall.
praise him forever reigning,
all here who hear his word
our life and all sustaining.
my soul, oh, praise the Lord!

10 All glory and praise

to the God of all grace,
who hast bought us, and sought us,
and guided our ways.

Hallelujah! Thine the glory.

Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory.
Revive us again.

All glory and praise

to the Lamb that was slain,
who hath borne all our sins,
and hath cleansed every stain.

We praise Thee, O God,

for Thy Spirit of light,
who hath shown us our Savior,
and scattered our night.

11 (4 out of 6 stanzas)

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:

How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!

2. When through the woods and forest glades I wander

and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze.

3. And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,

sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
he bled and died to take away my sin.

4. When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation

and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
and there proclaim,My God, how great thou art!

14 All hail the power of Jesus’ Name!

Let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown Him, crown Him Lord of all.

2. Crown Him, ye martyrs of your God,

who from His altar call;
extol the Stem of Jesse’s Rod,
and crown Him, crown Him Lord of all.

3. Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget

the wormwood and the gall,
go spread your trophies at His feet,
and crown Him, crown Him Lord of all.

4. Let every tribe and every tongue

before Him prostrate fall
and shout in universal song
the crownèd, crownèd Lord of all.

15 Alleluia! sing to Jesus! His the scepter, His the throne.

Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone.
Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood.
Jesus out of every nation has redeemed us by His blood.

Alleluia! not as orphans are we left in sorrow now;
Alleluia! He is near us, faith believes, nor questions how;
Though the cloud from sight received Him when the forty days were o’er
Shall our hearts forget His promise, “I am with you evermore”?

Alleluia! bread of angels, Thou on earth our food, our stay;
Alleluia! here the sinful flee to Thee from day to day:
Intercessor, Friend of sinners, Earth’s Redeemer, plead for me,
Where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea.

Alleluia! King eternal, Thee the Lord of lords we own;
Alleluia! born of Mary, Earth Thy footstool, Heav’n Thy throne:
Thou within the veil hast entered, robed in flesh our great High Priest;
Thou on earth both priest and victim in the Eucharistic feast.

19 Thou, whose almighty Word
Chaos and darkness heard,
And took their flight;
Hear us, we humbly pray,
And, where the Gospel’s day
Sheds not its glorious ray,
Let there be light!

Thou, who didst come to bring
On Thy redeeming wing
Healing and sight,
Health to the sick in mind,
Sight to the inly blind,
O now, to all mankind,
Let there be light!

Spirit of truth and love,
Life giving, holy Dove,
Speed forth Thy flight;
Move on the water’s face
Bearing the lamp of grace,
And, in earth’s darkest place,
Let there be light!

Blessèd and holy Three,
Glorious Trinity,
Wisdom, love, might!
Boundless as ocean’s tide,
Rolling in fullest pride,
Through the world far and wide,
Let there be light!

31

Let us, with a gladsome mind,
Praise the Lord, for He is kind.

For His mercies aye endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

He with all commanding might
Filled the new made world with light.

Let us blaze His Name abroad,
For of gods He is the God.

He hath, with a piteous eye,
Looked upon our misery.

Let us, with a gladsome mind,
Praise the Lord, for He is kind.

32 Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice,

with exultation springing,
and, with united heart and voice,
and holy rapture singing,
proclaim the wonders God hath done,
how His right arm the victory won;
right dearly it hath cost Him.

Fast bound in Satan’s chains I lay,
death brooded darkly o’er me,
sin was my torment night and day,
in sin my mother bore me;
yea, deep and deeper still I fell,
life had become a living hell,
so firmly sin possessed me.

But God beheld my wretched state
before the world’s foundation,
and, mindful of His mercies great,
he planned my soul’s salvation.
A father’s heart He turned to me,
sought my redemption fervently:
he gave His dearest Treasure.

He spoke to His belovèd Son:
’Tis time to have compassion.
then go, bright Jewel of My crown,
and bring to man salvation;
from sin and sorrow set him free,
slay bitter death for him that he
may live with Thee forever.

The Son obeyed His Father’s will,
was born of virgin mother,
and God’s good pleasure to fulfill,
he came to be my Brother.
no garb of pomp or power He wore,
a servant’s form, like mine, He bore,
to lead the devil captive.

To me He spake: "Hold fast to Me,
I am thy Rock and Castle;
Thy Ransom I Myself will be,
for thee I strive and wrestle;
for I am with thee, I am thine,
and evermore thou shalt be Mine:
the Foe shall not divide us.

The Foe shall shed my precious blood,
me of My life bereaving.
All this I suffer for thy good;
be steadfast and believing.
Life shall from death the victory win,
my innocence shall bear thy sin;
so art Thou blest forever.

Now to my Father I depart,
the Holy Spirit sending
and, heavenly wisdom to impart,
my help to thee extending.
He shall in trouble comfort thee,
teach thee to know and follow Me,
and in all truth shall guide thee.

What I have done and taught, teach thou,
my ways forsake thou never;
so shall My kingdom flourish now
and God be praised forever.
Take heed lest men with base alloy
the heavenly treasure should destroy;
this counsel I bequeath thee.

42 Jesus, Thy name hath pow’r to bless

our troubled souls in all distress.
On us, dear Lord, bestow Thy grace,
and guide us safely all our days.

The only Son of God Thou art,

forgive our sins and cleanse our heart;
behold and help us in our need,
Thou who art God and man indeed.

In Thee is all our righteousness,

in Thee all peace and blessedness.
Who trusteth in Thy holy name
shall be redeemed from sin and shame.

We praise Thee for Thy living Word

and for Thy sacraments, O Lord.
Grant us Thy peace in all our strife,
and after death eternal life.

44 O for a thousand tongues to sing
my great Redeemer’s praise,
the glories of my God and King,
the triumphs of His grace!

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
’Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
’Tis life, and health, and peace.

He speaks, and, listening to His voice,
New life the dead receive,
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
The humble poor believe.

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

Glory to God, and praise and love
Be ever, ever given,
By saints below and saints above,
The church in earth and heaven.

46 Tell me the story of Jesus,
write on my heart every word.
Tell me the story most precious,
sweetest that ever was heard.
Tell how the angels in chorus,
sang as they welcomed His birth.
“Glory to God in the highest!
Peace and good tidings to earth.”

Tell me the story of Jesus,
write on my heart every word.
Tell me the story most precious,
sweetest that ever was heard.

Fasting alone in the desert,
tell of the days that are past.
How for our sins He was tempted,
yet was triumphant at last.
Tell of the years of His labor,
tell of the sorrow He bore.
He was despised and afflicted,
homeless, rejected and poor.

Tell of the cross where they nailed Him,
writhing in anguish and pain.
Tell of the grave where they laid Him,
tell how He liveth again.
Love in that story so tender,
clearer than ever I see.
Stay, let me weep while you whisper,
love paid the ransom for me.

48 What a Friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
o what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge,
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do your friends despise, forsake you?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield you;
you will find a solace there.

51
Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord!
Be all Thy graces now outpoured
on each believer’s mind and heart;
Thy fervent love to them impart.
Lord, by the brightness of Thy light
Thou in the faith dost men unite
of every land and every tongue;
this to Thy praise, O Lord, our God, be sung.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Thou holy Light, Guide divine,
oh, cause the Word of Life to shine!
Teach us to know our God aright
and call Him Father with delight.
From every error keep us free;
let none but Christ our Master be
that we in living faith abide,
in Him, our Lord, with all our might confide.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Thou holy Fire, Comfort true,
grant us the will Thy work to do
and in Thy service to abide;
let trials turn us not aside.
Lord, by Thy power prepare each heart
and to our weakness strength impart
that bravely here we may contend,
through life and death to Thee, our Lord, ascend.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

57The Church’s one foundation

is Jesus Christ her Lord,
she is His new creation
by water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her
to be His holy bride;
with His own blood He bought her
and for her life He died.

She is from every nation,
yet one o’er all the earth;
her charter of salvation,
one Lord, one faith, one birth;
one holy Name she blesses,
partakes one holy food,
and to one hope she presses,
with every grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder
men see her sore oppressed,
by schisms rent asunder,
by heresies distressed:
Yet saints their watch are keeping,
their cry goes up, “How long?”
and soon the night of weeping
shall be the morn of song!

’Mid toil and tribulation,
and tumult of her war,
she waits the consummation
of peace forevermore;
till, with the vision glorious,
her longing eyes are blest,
and the great Church victorious
shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union
with God the Three in One,
and mystic sweet communion
with those whose rest is won,
with all her sons and daughters
who, by the Master’s hand
led through the deathly waters,
repose in Eden land.

58 Christian hearts, in love united,
seek alone in Jesus rest;
has He not your love excited?
then let love inspire each breast;
members on our Head depending
lights reflecting Him, our Sun,
brethren His commands attending,
we in Him, our Lord, are one.

 Grant, Lord, that with Thy direction,
“Love each other,” we comply,
aiming with unfeigned affection
Thy love to exemplify;
Let our mutual love be glowing,
thus will all men plainly see,
that we, as on one stem growing,
living branches are in Thee.

O that such may be our union,
as Thine with the Father is,
and not one of our communion
e’er forsake the path of bliss;
may our light ’fore men with brightness,
from Thy light reflected, shine;
thus the world will bear us witness,
that we, Lord, are truly Thine.

75 Let us break bread together on our knees,

let us break bread together on our knees.
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let us drink wine together on our knees,
let us drink wine together on our knees.
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let us praise God together on our knees,
let us praise God together on our knees.
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

78 Lord Jesus, Christ, be present now,
our hearts in true devotion bow,
Thy Spirit send with grace divine,
and let Thy truth within us shine.

Unseal our lips to sing Thy praise,
our souls to Thee in worship raise,
make strong our faith, increase our light
that we may know Thy Name aright.

Until we join the hosts that cry,
“Holy art Thou, O Lord, most high!”
and in the light of that blest place
fore’er behold Thee face to face.

Glory to God the Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit, Three in One!
To Thee, O blessèd Trinity,
be praise throughout eternity!

80 What joy there is in coming
to God’s own courts so fair,
where faithful souls are blooming
like lilies in His care!
They raise their chalices tender
for Heav’n’s refreshing dew,
//: ’mid blessings God doth render
they life and strength renew ://

How beautiful the union

of souls redeemed and free,
who hold with God communion
in faith and purity!
While songs of praise are filling
their sacred place of rest,
//: who then can be unwilling
to join their circle blest? ://

Come, see the Lord’s salvation

and taste His love sincere;
come, pray without cessation,
watch with His people here.
Outside, the world makes merry,
unhappy ’mid its toys,
//: but in God’s sanctuary
the soul finds heav’nly joys ://

May ne’er my footsteps falter

tow’rd night away from day;
my light shines from God’s altar,
my Sun I’ll seek alway.
Here in His presence glorious
it is so good to be—
//: let here my soul victorious
its tabernacle see ://

81Now before Thee, Lord, we gather
Tt receive Thy precious Word;
let Thy grace in showers, O Father,
on our parchèd hearts be poured.
Send Thy Holy Spirit o’er us,
with Thy quick’ning fire restore us,
//: at Thy table spread before us
fill our hung’ring souls, dear Lord ://

May Thy Word, to us now given,
be retained in hearts contrite;
On the narrow way to Heaven
lead us in Thy perfect light.
Hush, within us, all commotion,
silence each disturbing notion;
//: may we, Lord, with true devotion
use this hour of grace aright ://

Of the time may we avail us,
when to seek us Thou art near;
soon the day of grace may fail us,
and no message more we hear.
Turn our minds to meditation
on our need of Thy salvation;
//: urge on all Thine invitation—
to our prayer incline Thine ear ://

86

Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven to earth come down;
fix in us thy humble dwelling;
all thy faithful mercies crown!

Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
pure unbounded love Thou art;
visit us with Thy salvation;
enter every trembling heart.

Thee we would be always blessing,
serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
pray and praise Thee without ceasing,
glory in Thy perfect love.

Finish, then, Thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be.
Let us see Thy great salvation
perfectly restored in Thee;

changed from glory into glory,
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before Thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.

94 Savior, Thy dying love

Thou gavest me.
Nor should I aught withhold,
dear Lord, from Thee.
In love my soul would bow,
my heart fulfill its vow,
some offering bring Thee now,
something for Thee.

O’er the blest mercy seat,
pleading for me,
my feeble faith looks up,
Jesus, to Thee.
Help me the cross to bear,
Thy wondrous love declare,
some song to raise, or prayer,
something for Thee.

Give me a faithful heart,
likeness to Thee.
that each departing day
henceforth may see
some work of love begun,
some deed of kindness done,
some wanderer sought and won,
something for Thee.

All that I am and have,
Thy gifts so free,
in joy, in grief, through life,
O Lord, for Thee!
And when Thy face I see,
my ransomed soul shall be
through all eternity,
something for Thee.

113 Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming

from tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse’s lineage coming,
as men of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright,
amid the cold of winter,
when half spent was the night.

Isaiah ’twas foretold it,
the Rose I have in mind;
with Mary we behold it,
the virgin mother kind.
To show God’s love aright,
she bore to men a Savior,
when half spent was the night.

This Flower, whose fragrance tender
with sweetness fills the air,
dispels with glorious splendor
the darkness everywhere;
True Man, yet very God,
from sin and death He saves us,
and lightens every load.

O Savior, Child of Mary,
who felt our human woe,
o Savior, King of glory,
who dost our weakness know;
bring us at length we pray,
to the bright courts of Heaven,
and to the endless day!

114 Silent night, holy night,

Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love’s pure light;
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

Silent night, holy night
Wondrous star, lend thy light;
With the angels let us sing,
Alleluia to our King;
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!

115 O little town of Bethlehem,

how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
the silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
the everlasting Light;
the hopes and fears of all the years
are met in thee tonight.

How silently, how silently,
the wondrous Gift is giv’n;
so God imparts to human hearts
the blessings of His Heav’n.
No ear may hear His coming,
but in this world of sin,
where meek souls will receive Him still,
the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,
descend to us, we pray;
cast out our sin, and enter in,
be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
the great glad tidings tell;
o come to us, abide with us,
our Lord Emmanuel!

118 Joy bells are ringing,

Christmas is bringing
tidings of Jesus’ birth.
Candles are gleaming,
gladness is streaming
out over all the earth.

Light is ascending,

nighttime is ending,
sunshine from God appears.
Hope of the ages,
foretold by sages,
comes to dispel all fears.

O what a treasure

God in His pleasure
lovingly gives today.
Grace to the lowly,
peace, pure and holy,
angels to men convey.

Come to the manger,

kindred and stranger,
hail now the newborn King!
In adoration
with jubilation
peoples and nations sing!

119 All hail to thee, O blessèd morn!

to tidings long by prophets borne
hast thou fulfillment given.
O sacred and immortal day,
when unto earth, in glorious ray,
descends the grace of Heaven!
Singing, ringing, sounds are blending,
praises sending unto Heaven
for the Savior to us given.

’Tis God’s own Image and withal,

the Son of Man, that mortals all
may find in Him a Brother.
He comes, with peace and love to bide
on earth, the erring race to guide
and help as could no other;
rather gather closer, fonder,
sheep that wander, feed and fold them,
than let evil powers hold them.

He tears, like other men, will shed,

our sorrows share, and be our aid,
through His eternal power;
the Lord’s good will unto us show,
and mingle in our cup of woe
the drops of mercy’s shower;
Dying, buying through His passion
our salvation and to mortals
opening the heavenly portals.

He comes, for our redemption sent,

and by His glory Heaven is rent
to close upon us never;
our blessèd Shepherd He would be,
whom we may follow faithfully
and be with Him forever;
higher, nigher glory winging,
praises singing to the Father
and His Son, our Lord and Savior.

122 O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,

o come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem.
come and behold Him, born the King of angels;

O come, let us adore Him,
o come, let us adore Him,
o come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

See how the shepherds, summoned to His cradle,

Leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze;
We too will thither bend our joyful footsteps;

True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal,
Lo, He shuns not the Virgin’s womb;
Son of the Father, begotten, not created;

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation;
O sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God, all glory in the highest;

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning;
Jesus, to Thee be glory given;
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing.

123 Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King;
peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!”
Joyful, all ye nations rise,
join the triumph of the skies;
with th’angelic host proclaim,
“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ, by highest Heav’n adored;

Christ the everlasting Lord;
late in time, behold Him come,
offspring of a virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
hail th’incarnate Deity,
pleased with us in flesh to dwell,
Jesus our Emmanuel.

Hail the heav’nly Prince of Peace!

Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
ris’n with healing in His wings.
Mild He lays His glory by,
born that man no more may die.
Born to raise the sons of earth,
born to give them second birth.

125 From Heaven above to earth I come,

go bear good news to every home;
glad tidings of great joy I bring,
whereof I now will say and sing.

To you, this night, is born a Child

of Mary, chosen mother mild;
this tender Child of lowly birth,
shall be the joy of all your earth.

’Tis Christ our God, who far on high

had heard your sad and bitter cry;
himself will your Salvation be,
himself from sin will make you free.

He brings those blessings long ago

prepared by God for all below;
that in His heavenly kingdom blest
you may with us forever rest.

These are the tokens ye shall mark,

the swaddling clothes and manger dark;
there shall ye find the young Child laid,
by Whom the heavens and earth were made.

Now let us all, with gladsome cheer,

follow the shepherds, and draw near
to see this wondrous Gift of God,
who hath His own dear Son bestowed.

Give heed, my heart, lift up thine eyes!

What is it in yon manger lies?
Who is this Child, so young and fair?
The blessèd Christ Child lieth there!

Welcome to earth, Thou noble Guest,

Through Whom e’en wicked men are blest!
Thou com’st to share our misery,
what can we render, Lord, to Thee!

Ah, Lord, who hast created all,

how hast Thou made Thee weak and small,
to lie upon the coarse dry grass,
the food of humble ox and ass.

Were earth a thousand times as fair,

beset with gold and jewels rare,
she yet were far too poor to be
a narrow cradle, Lord, for Thee.

For velvets soft and silken stuff

Thou hast but hay and straw so rough,
whereon Thou King, so rich and great,
as ’twere Thy heaven, art throned in state.

Thus hath it pleased Thee to make plain

the truth to us, poor fools and vain,
that this world’s honor, wealth and might
are naught and worthless in Thy sight.

Ah, dearest Jesus, holy Child,

make Thee a bed, soft, undefiled,
here in my poor heart’s inmost shrine,
that I may evermore be Thine.

My heart for very joy doth leap,

my lips no more can silence keep,
I too must sing, with joyful tongue,
that sweetest ancient cradle song.

Glory to God in highest Heaven,

who unto man His Son hath given,
while angels sing, with pious mirth,
a glad New Year to all the earth.

128 The first Noel the angel did say

was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
in fields where they lay tending their sheep,
on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

Born is the King of Israel.

They lookèd up and saw a star

shining in the east, beyond them far;
and to the earth it gave great light,
and so it continued both day and night.

And by the light of that same star

three Wise Men came from country far;
to seek for a King was their intent,
and to follow the star wherever it went.

This star drew nigh to the northwest,

over Bethlehem it took its rest;
and there it did both stop and stay,
right over the place where Jesus lay.

Then entered in those Wise Men three,

full reverently upon the knee,
and offered there, in His presence,
their gold and myrrh and frankincense.

Then let us all with one accord

sing praises to our heavenly Lord;
that hath made Heaven and earth of naught,
and with His blood mankind hath bought.

139 My Jesus, I would ne’er forget,

that hour I spent with Thee;
when there I saw Thy bloody sweat
in dark Gethsemane.

I’ll ne’er forget, I’ll ne’er forget,

I’ll ne’er forgetful be,
when there I saw Thy bloody sweat
in dark Gethsemane.

’Twas in that olive grove I felt

that Thou hadst died for me;
Alas, how great I saw my guilt
while in Gethsemane.

I thought of how Thy heart did throb,

while all Thine own did flee,
and left Thee with the cruel mob,
in sad Gethsemane.

Should e’er our love to Thee grow cold,

and we forgetful be,
we’ll call to mind Thy love untold
while in Gethsemane.

144 O sacred Head, now wounded,

with grief and shame weighed down,
now scornfully surrounded
with thorns, Thine only crown;
o sacred Head, what glory,
what bliss till now was Thine!
Yet, though despised and gory,
I joy to call Thee mine.

Now from Thy cheeks has vanished

their color once so fair;
from Thy red lips is banished
the splendor that was there.
Grim death, with cruel rigor,
hath robbed Thee of Thy life;
thus Thou hast lost Thy vigor,
Thy strength in this sad strife.

My burden in Thy Passion, Lord,

Thou hast borne for me,
for it was my transgression
which brought this woe on Thee.
I cast me down before Thee,
wrath were my rightful lot;
have mercy, I implore Thee;
Redeemer, spurn me not!

Here I will stand beside Thee,

from Thee I will not part;
o Savior, do not chide me!
When breaks Thy loving heart,
when soul and body languish
in death’s cold, cruel grasp,
then, in Thy deepest anguish,
Thee in mine arms I’ll clasp.

The joy can never be spoken,

above all joys beside,
when in Thy body broken
I thus with safety hide.
O Lord of Life, desiring
Thy glory now to see,
beside Thy cross expiring,
I’d breathe my soul to Thee.

My Savior, be Thou near me

when death is at my door;
then let Thy presence cheer me,
forsake me nevermore!
When soul and body languish,
oh, leave me not alone,
but take away mine anguish
by virtue of Thine own!

Be Thou my consolation,

my shield when I must die;
remind me of Thy passion
when my last hour draws nigh.
Mine eyes shall then behold Thee,
upon Thy cross shall dwell,
my heart by faith enfolds Thee.
Who dieth thus dies well.

145 When I survey the wondrous cross

on which the Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,

save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

His dying crimson, like a robe,

spreads o’er His body on the tree;
then I am dead to all the globe,
and all the globe is dead to me.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,

that were a present far too small;
love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.

147 Praise the Savior now and ever;

praise Him, all beneath the skies;
prostrate lying, suff’ring, dying
on the cross, a sacrifice.
Vict’ry gaining, life obtaining,
now in glory He doth rise.

Man’s work faileth, Christ’s availeth;

He is all our righteousness;
He, our Savior, has forever
set us free from dire distress.
Through His merit we inherit
light and peace and happiness.

Sin’s bonds severed, we’re delivered,

Christ has bruised the serpent’s head;
death no longer is the stronger,
hell itself is captive led.
Christ has risen from death’s prison,
o’er the tomb He light has shed.

For His favor, praise forever,

unto God the Father sing;
Praise the Savior, praise Him ever,
Son of God, our Lord and King.
Praise the Spirit, through Christ’s merit,
he doth us salvation bring.

148  Hallelujah, He is risen!

Jesus is gone up on high!
Burst the bars of death asunder,
angels shout and men reply:
He is risen, He is risen,
living now no more to die!
He is risen, He is risen,
living now no more to die!

Hallelujah, He is risen!

Our exalted Head to be;
sends the witness of the Spirit
that our advocate is He:
He is risen, He is risen,
justified in Him are we!
He is risen, He is risen,
justified in Him are we!

Hallelujah, He is risen!

Death for aye hath lost his sting,
Christ, Himself the Resurrection,
from the grave His own will bring:
He is risen, He is risen,
Living Lord and coming King!
He is risen, He is risen,
Living Lord and coming King!

152 Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia,

Christians, haste your vows to pay, Alleluia,
Offer ye your praises meet, Alleluia,
at the Paschal Victim’s feet, Alleluia!

For the sheep the Lamb hath bled, Alleluia,

sinless in the sinner’s stead, Alleluia,
“Christ is risen,” today we cry, Alleluia,
now He lives no more to die, Alleluia!

Christ, the Victim undefiled, Alleluia,

man to God hath reconciled, Alleluia,
whilst in strange and awful strife, Alleluia,
met together Death and Life: Alleluia!

Christians, on this happy day, Alleluia,

haste with joy your vows to pay, Alleluia,
“Christ is risen,” today we cry, Alleluia,
now He lives no more to die, Alleluia!

153 Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia!

Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia!

Vain the stone, the watch, the seal, Alleluia!

Christ hath burst the gates of hell, Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids His rise, Alleluia!
Christ hath opened paradise, Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!

Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once He died our souls to save, Alleluia!
Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

Soar we now where Christ hath led, Alleluia!

following our exalted Head, Alleluia!
Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!
ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

170 Behold a host, arrayed in white,

Like thousand snow clad mountains bright,
With palms they stand. Who is this band
Before the throne of light?
Lo, these are they of glorious fame
Who from the great affliction came
And in the flood of Jesus’ blood
Are cleansed from guilt and blame.
Now gathered in the holy place
Their voices they in worship raise,
Their anthems swell where God doth dwell,
Mid angels’ song of praise.

Despised and scorned, they sojourned here;

But now, how glorious they appear!
Those martyrs stand a priestly band,
God’s throne forever near.
So oft, in troubled days gone by,
In anguish they would weep and sigh.
At home above the God of Love
For aye their tears shall dry.
They now enjoy their Sabbath rest,
The paschal banquet of the blest;
The Lamb, their Lord, at festal board
Himself is Host and Guest.

Then hail, ye mighty legions, yea,

All hail! Now safe and blest for aye,
And praise the Lord, who with His Word
Sustained you on the way.
Ye did the joys of earth disdain,
Ye toiled and sowed in tears and pain.
Farewell, now bring your sheaves and sing
Salvation’s glad refrain.
Swing high your palms, lift up your song,
Yea, make it myriad voices strong.
Eternally shall praise to Thee,
God, and the Lamb belong.

171

For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
Who Thee by faith before the world confessed,
Thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might;

Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight;
Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

O may Thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold,

Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old,
And win with them the victor’s crown of gold.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

O blest communion, fellowship divine!

We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
All are one in Thee, for all are Thine.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,

Steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
And hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

176 Again Thy glorious sun doth raise,

I praise Thee, o my Lord!
With courage, strength and hope renewed
I touch the joyful chord.

On good and evil, Lord, Thy sun

is rising as on me,
let me in patience and in love
seek Thus to be like Thee.

May I in virtue and in faith

and with Thy gifts content,
rejoice beneath Thy covering wings,
each day in mercy sent.

Safe with Thy counsel in my work,

Thee, Lord, I´ll keep in view,
and feel that still Thy bounteos grace
is every morning new.

179  Morn amid the mountains -

lovely solitude!
Gushing streams and fountains
murmur: "God is good!
God is good!"

Now the glad sun, breaking,

pours a golden flood.
Deepest vales, awaking,
ecco: "God is good!
God is good!"

Hymns of praise are ringing

through the leafy wood;
songsters, sweetly singing,
warble: "God is good!
God is good!"

Wake, and join the chorus,

child with soul endued;
He whose smile is o´er us,
God, our God is good!
God is good!

181  Morning has broken, like the first morning.

Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird.
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning,
praise for the springing fresh from the word

Sweet the rain´s new fall, sunlit from heaven

like the frist dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden,
sprung in completeness where his feet pass.

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning

born of the one light, Eden saw play.
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God´s recreation of the new day.

185 O Christ, who art the Light and Day,

Thou drivest darksome night away!
We know Thee as the Light of light
Illuminating mortal sight.

All holy Lord, we pray to Thee,

Keep us tonight from danger free;
Grant us, dear Lord, in Thee to rest,
So be our sleep in quiet blest.

Let not the tempter round us creep

With thoughts of evil while we sleep,
Nor with his wiles the flesh allure
And make us in Thy sight impure.

Yea, our Defender, be Thou nigh,

To bid the powers of darkness fly;
Keep us from sin, and guide for good
Thy servants purchased by Thy blood.

Blest Thee in One and One in Three,

Almighty God, we pray to Thee,
That Thou wouldst now vouchsafe to bless
Our fast with fruits of righteousness.

189  Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;

The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;

Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word;

But as Thou dwell’st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.

What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile;

And, though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee,
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;

Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;

Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

191 The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended,

the darkness falls at Thy behest.
To Thee our morning hymns ascended,
Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

We thank Thee that Thy church, unsleeping,

while earth rolls onward into light,
through all the world her watch is keeping,
and rests not now by day or night.

The sun that bids us rest is waking

our brethren ’neath the western sky,
and hour by hour fresh lips are making
Thy wondrous doings heard on high.

So be it, Lord; Thy throne shall never,

like earth’s proud empires, pass away:
Thy kingdom stands, and grows forever,
till all Thy creatures own Thy sway.

195 Our God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.

Under the shadow of Thy throne

Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defense is sure.

Before the hills in order stood,

Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

A thousand ages in Thy sight

Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

Time, like an ever rolling stream,

Bears all its sons away;
They fly, forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

Our God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while troubles last,
And our eternal home.

211 Pass me not, O gentle Savior,

Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

Savior, Savior,

Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
Do not pass me by.

Let me at Thy throne of mercy

Find a sweet relief,
Kneeling there in deep contrition;
Help my unbelief.

Trusting only in Thy merit,

Would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit,
Save me by Thy grace.

Thou the Spring of all my comfort,

More than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee?
Whom in Heav’n but Thee?

221 Come to the Savior, make no delay;

Here in His Word He has shown us the way;
Here in our midst He’s standing today,
Tenderly saying, “Come!”

Joyful, joyful will the meeting be,

When from sin our hearts are pure and free;
And we shall gather, Savior, with Thee,
In our eternal home.

“Suffer the children!” oh, hear His voice!

Let ev’ry heart leap forth and rejoice;
And let us freely make Him our choice;
Do not delay, but come.

Think once again, He’s with us today;

Heed now His blest command, and obey;
Hear now His accents tenderly say,
“Will you, My children, come?”

222  Just as I am, without one plea,

But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, and waiting not

To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;

Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,

Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

223 There is a gate that stands ajar,

And through its portals gleaming
A radiance from the cross afar,
The Savior’s love revealing.

O depth of mercy! Can it be

That gate was left ajar for me?
For me! For me!
Was left ajar for me!

That gate ajar stands free for all

Who seek through it salvation;
The rich and poor, the great and small,
Of every tribe and nation.

Press onward, then, though foes may frown,

While mercy’s gate is open;
Accept the cross, and win the crown,
Love’s everlasting token.

Beyond the river’s brink we’ll lay

The cross that here is given,
And bear the crown of life away,
And love Him more in Heaven.

226 O boundless salvation! deep ocean of love,

O fullness of mercy, Christ brought from above,
The whole world redeeming, so rich and so free,
Now flowing for all men, now flowing for all men,
Now flowing for all men, come, roll over me!

My sins they are many, their stains are so deep,

And bitter the tears of remorse that I weep;
But useless is weeping; thou great crimson sea,
Thy waters can cleanse me, thy waters can cleanse me,
Thy waters can cleanse me, come, roll over me!

Now tossed with temptation, then haunted with fears,

My life has been joyless and useless for years;
I feel something better most surely would be
If once thy pure waters, if once thy pure waters,
If once thy pure waters would roll over me.

O ocean of mercy, oft longing I’ve stood

On the brink of thy wonderful, life giving flood!
Once more I have reachèd this soul cleansing sea,
I will not go back, I will not go back,
I will not go back till it rolls over me.

The tide is now flowing, I’m touching the wave,

I hear the loud call of the Mighty to Save;
My faith’s growing bolder, delivered I’ll be;
I plunge ’neath the waters, I plunge ’neath the waters,
I plunge ’neath the waters they roll over me.

And now, hallelujah! the rest of my days

Shall gladly be spent in promoting His praise
Who opened His bosom to pour out this sea
Of boundless salvation, of boundless salvation,
Of boundless salvation for you and for me.

230 Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in Thee;
let the water and the blood,
from Thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labor of my hands
can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
ll for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling;
naked, come to Thee for dress;
helpless look to Thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,
when mine eyes shall close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in Thee.

231 Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.

235 Love divine, so great and wondrous,
Deep and mighty, pure, sublime!
Coming from the heart of Jesus,
Just the same through tests of time.

He the pearly gates will open,
So that I may enter in;
For He purchased my redemption
And forgave me all my sin.

Like a dove when hunted, frightened,
As a wounded fawn was I;
Brokenhearted, yet He healed me,
He will heed the sinner’s cry.

Love divine, so great and wondrous,
All my sins He then forgave!
I will sing His praise forever,
For His blood, His power to save.

In life’s eventide, at twilight,
At His door I’ll knock and wait;
By the precious love of Jesus
I shall enter Heaven’s gate.

237 A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper He, amid the flood

of mortal ills prevailing:
for still our ancient foe

doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great,

and, armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing;
were not the right Man on our side,

the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be?

Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name,

from age to age the same,
and He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God hath willed

His truth to triumph through us:
the Prince of Darkness grim,

we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,

for lo, his doom is sure,
one little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers,
no thanks to them, abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours

through Him Who with us sideth:
let goods and kindred go,

this mortal life also;
the body they may kill:

God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

239 Lord, Thee I love with all my heart;
I pray Thee, ne’er from me depart;
with tender mercy cheer me.
Earth has no pleasure I would share,
yea, Heav’n itself were void and bare
if Thou, Lord, wert not near me.
And should my heart for sorrow break
my trust in Thee can nothing shake.
Thou art the portion I have sought;
Thy precious blood my soul has bought.
Lord Jesus Christ,
my God and Lord, my God and Lord,
forsake me not! I trust Thy Word.

Yea, Lord, ’twas Thy rich bounty gave
my body, soul, and all I have
in this poor life of labor.
Lord, grant that I in every place
may glorify Thy lavish grace
and serve and help my neighbor.
Let no false doctrine me beguile,
let Satan not my soul defile.
Give strength and patience unto me
to bear my cross and follow Thee.
Lord Jesus Christ,
my God and Lord, my God and Lord,
in death Thy comfort still afford.

Lord, let at last Thine angels come,
to Abr’am’s bosom bear me home,
that I may die unfearing;
and in its narrow chamber keep
my body safe in peaceful sleep
until Thy reappearing.
And then from death awaken me,
that these mine eyes with joy may see
O Son of God, Thy glorious face,
my Savior and my fount of grace.
Lord Jesus Christ,
My prayer attend, my prayer attend,
and I will praise Thee without end!

245 Now I have found the firm foundation
which holds mine anchor ever sure;
’twas laid before the world’s creation
in Christ my Savior’s wounds secure;
foundation which unmoved shall stay
when Heav’n and earth will pass away.

It is that mercy never ending
which human wisdom far transcends,
of Him Who, loving arms extending,
to wretched sinners condescends;
whose heart with pity still doth break
whether we seek Him or forsake.

O depth of love, to me revealing
the sea where my sins disappear!
In Christ my wounds find perfect healing,
there is no condemnation here;
for Jesus’ blood through earth and skies
forever “Mercy! Mercy!” cries.

I never will forget this crying;
in faith I’ll trust it all my days,
and when o’er all my sins I’m sighing,
into the Father’s heart I’ll gaze;
for there is always to be found
free mercy without end and bound.

Though I be robbed of every pleasure
that makes my soul and body glad
and be deprived of earthly treasure
and be forsaken, lone, and sad,
though my desire for help seem vain,
his mercy shall with me remain.

Though earthly trials should oppress me
and cares from day to day increase;
though earth’s vain things should sore distress me
and rob me of my Savior’s peace;
though I be brought down to the dust,
still in His mercy I will trust.

When all my deeds I am reviewing,
the deeds that I admire the most,
I find in all my thought and doing
that there is naught whereof to boast.
Yet this sweet comfort shall abide—
in mercy I can still confide.

Let mercy cause me to be willing
to bear my lot and not to fret.
While He my restless heart is stilling,
may I His mercy not forget!
Come weal, come woe, my heart to test,
his mercy is my only rest.

I’ll stand upon this firm foundation
as long as I on earth remain;
this shall engage my meditation
while I the breath of life retain;
and then, when face to face with Thee,
I’ll sing of mercy, great and free.

248 Children of the heav’nly Father
safely in His bosom gather;
nestling bird nor star in Heaven
such a refuge e’er was given.

God His own doth tend and nourish;
in His holy courts they flourish;
from all evil things He spares them;
in His mighty arms He bears them.

Neither life nor death shall ever
from the Lord His children sever;
unto them His grace He showeth,
and their sorrows all He knoweth.

Praise the Lord in joyful numbers:
Your Protector never slumbers.
At the will of your Defender
Ev’ry foeman must surrender.

Though He giveth or He taketh,
God His children ne’er forsaketh;
his the loving purpose solely
to preserve them pure and holy.

249 Day by day, and with each passing moment,
strength I find, to meet my trials here;
trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He Whose heart is kind beyond all measure
gives unto each day what He deems best—
lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,
mingling toil with peace and rest.

Every day, the Lord Himself is near me
with a special mercy for each hour;
all my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
He Whose Name is Counselor and Power;
The protection of His child and treasure
is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
this the pledge to me He made.

Help me then in every tribulation
so to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
that I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
ever to take, as from a father’s hand,
one by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
till I reach the promised land.

252 All the way my Savior leads me;
what have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His tender mercy,
who through life has been my Guide?
Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort,
here by faith in Him to dwell!
//: For I know, whate’er befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well ://

All the way my Savior leads me,
cheers each winding path I tread;
gives me grace for every trial,
feeds me with the living Bread.
Though my weary steps may falter,
and my soul athirst may be,
//: gushing from the Rock before me,
lo! A spring of joy I see ://

All the way my Savior leads me
O the fullness of His love!
Perfect rest to me is promised
in my Father’s house above.
When my spirit, clothed immortal,
wings its flight to realms of day
//: This my song through endless ages—
Jesus led me all the way ://

259 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

Perfect submission, all is at rest
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

271 Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.

Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone.
Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God to Thee.

There let the way appear, steps unto Heav’n;
All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee.

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee.

Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I’ll fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.

275 Lead, kindly Light, amid th’encircling gloom, lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home; lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path; but now lead Thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years!

So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still will lead me on.
O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till the night is gone,
And with the morn those angel faces smile, which I
Have loved long since, and lost awhile!

277 O take my hand, dear Father, and lead Thou me,
Till at my journey’s ending I dwell with Thee.
Alone I cannot wander one single day,
So do Thou guide my footsteps on life’s rough way.

O cover with Thy mercy my poor, weak heart,
Lest I in joy or sorrow from Thee depart.
Permit Thy child to linger here at Thy feet,
Thy goodness blindly trusting with faith complete.

Though oft Thy power but faintly may stir my soul,
With Thee, my Light in darkness, I reach the goal.
Take then my hand, dear Father, and lead Thou me,
Till at my journey’s ending I dwell with Thee.

278 Saviour! I follow on,
guided by Thee,
seeing not yet the hand
that leadeth me;
hushed be my heart and still,
fear I no further ill;
only to meet Thy will
my will shall be.

Riven the rock for me
thirst to relieve,
manna from Heaven falls
fresh every eve;
never a want severe
causeth my eye a tear,
but Thou dost whisper near:
“Only believe!”

Saviour! I long to walk
closer with Thee;
led by Thy guiding hand
ever to be;
constantly near Thy side,
quickened and purified,
living for Him who died
freely for me!

281 More holiness give me, more strivings within.
More patience in suffering, more sorrow for sin.
More faith in my Savior, more sense of His care.
More joy in His service, more purpose in prayer.

More gratitude give me, more trust in the Lord.
More zeal for His glory, more hope in His Word.
More tears for His sorrows, more pain at His grief.
More meekness in trial, more praise for relief.

More purity give me, more strength to o’ercome,
More freedom from earth-stains, more longings for home.
More fit for the kingdom, more useful I’d be,
More blessèd and holy, more, Savior, like Thee.

285 There’s a wideness in God’s mercy,
Like the wideness of the sea;
There’s a kindness in His justice,
Which is more than liberty.

There is plentiful redemption
In the blood that has been shed;
There is joy for all the members
In the sorrows of the Head.

There is grace enough for thousands
Of new worlds as great as this;
There is room for fresh creations
In that upper home of bliss.

It is God: His love looks mighty,
But is mightier than it seems;
’Tis our Father: and His fondness
Goes far out beyond our dreams.

298 Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer,
Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven,
Feed me till I want no more;
Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
Be Thou still my Strength and Shield;
Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of deaths, and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises,
I will ever give to Thee;
I will ever give to Thee.

299 My heart is yearning ever
To reach a place of rest.
Jerusalem,
my happy home,
In thee my heart shall never
By sin or grief be pressed.
My heart is yearning ever
To reach a place of rest.

Behold the goal in glory,
Now shining from afar.
O city of
the God of love,
Where no more earthly worry
My happiness shall mar!
Behold the goal in glory,
Now shining from afar.

And even I shall conquer
In Jesus’ Name and might;
Tho’ weak and faint,
still as a saint
I’ll in the haven anchor,
Sweet haven of delight.
Yea, even I shall conquer
In Jesus’ Name and might.

302 I have a future all sublime,
Beyond the realms of space and time,
Where my Redeemer I shall see,
And sorrow nevermore shall be.

A precious heritage is mine;
’Tis kept above by love divine;
And while I tarry here below,
He gives me what is best, I know.

O, God be praised, He planned for me;
From anxious care I’m spared and free;
He bids me cast on Him my care—
What then remains for me to bear?

Sweet peace within my soul doth dwell;
With joy I sing: “Now all is well,”
He leads me safely by His hand
Until I reach the Glory Land.

O precious Savior, teach Thou me
To live my life more true to Thee
The little while I yet must roam
Before I reach my heav’nly home.

316 Rejoice, rejoice, believers, and let your lights appear.
The evening is advancing, and darker night is near.
The Bridegroom is arising, and soon He draweth nigh.
Up, pray, and watch, and wrestle: At midnight comes the cry.

O wise and holy virgins, now raise your voices higher,
Until in songs of triumph ye meet the angel choir.
The marriage feast is waiting, the gates wide open stand;
Rise up, ye heirs of glory, the Bridegroom is at hand.

Ye saints, who here in patience your cross and sufferings bore,
Shall live and reign forever, when sorrow is no more.
Around the throne of glory the Lamb ye shall behold;
In triumph cast before Him your diadems of gold!

Our hope and expectation, O Jesus, now appear!
Arise, Thou Sun so longed for, over this benighted sphere!
With hearts and hands uplifted, we plead, O Lord, to see
The day of earth’s redemption that brings us unto Thee.

321 Full many shall come from the east and the west
And sit at the feast of salvation,
With Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob the blest,
Obeying the Lord’s invitation.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!

Oh, that we the throng of the ransomed may swell,
To whom He hath granted remission!
God graciously make us in heaven to dwell
And save us from endless perdition.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!

Then ended will be, like a dream that is past,
All trial and trouble and sorrow;
All questions and doubts will be answered at last,
When dawneth eternity’s morrow.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!

Then Heaven will ring with an anthem more grand
Than ever on earth was recorded,
When all of the saved shall receive at His hand
The crown to the victors awarded.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!
